On Our Bookshelf: The Sun and Her Flowers
•Posted on December 11 2017

We’re excited to announce a new series on the blog entitled “On Our Bookshelf”! Every few weeks we will feature a new book a member of our staff has read and loved. First up is The Sun and Her Flowers by Rupi Kaur.

If you have an instragram/tumblr/twitter account, you’ve doubtlessly seen at least one of Rupi Kaur’s poems. The short, minimalistic vignettes are perfect for social media sharing because they are quick to read and aesthetically pleasing small black texts against a stark white background. However, the popularity of Kaur’s words extend beyond the ease of which they can be consumed. Her debut book of poetry, milk and honey, reached number one on the New York Times bestseller list and has sold over a million copies. The vast popularity is due not just to their ability to be retweeted but because Kaur is able to channel specific emotions and feelings in an impressively concise manner. Her poems are like little epiphanies; reading them often feels as though they were written just for you. Her newest collection “the sun and her flowers” achieves this just as well as milk and honey did. The themes covered in this collection are extensive: heartbreak, immigration, sexual assault, family, feminism, love. While it would be hard to relate to every poem on a personal level, the lyrical quality of Kaur’s words make each poem a pleasure to read.
